Description
memodio is a digital health application (DiGA) fighting forgetfulness and dementia 🧠 . Our app is prescribed by doctors, fully reimbursed by German statutory health insurance, and recommended by leading medical associations. In a clinical trial with 140 participants, we demonstrated that our app measurably improves memory performance, everyday independence, and quality of life. More than 10,000 people already trust memodio. We've been on the market for over five years, so while we have the speed and ownership culture of a startup, we're past the chaotic early days. We have a validated product and paying reimbursement partners. Now we're growing, and we're growing our engineering team with us.
What we're building
Our core product is live and helping thousands of users, but it's far from finished. A major part of this role is evolving the existing app to better fit the needs of our users: people aged 50+, often dealing with early-stage cognitive decline. That means every improvement by you has a direct, visible impact on someone's daily life. Beyond the core product, we're building new and adjacent products – including ones with AI capabilities. If working with LLMs and AI-powered features excites you, there's real room here to shape that from the start. If it doesn't, that's fine as well.
Tasks
Your role
We call this a Product Engineer role on purpose: you won't receive finished designs and implementation specs to execute. You'll get problems, context, and user needs and the freedom to figure out the best solution. That's a feature, not a bug: it gives you room for creativity and ownership over what ships. Today, our CTO is hands-on in the codebase, supported by a part-time engineer. You'll join as the next full-time engineer in a small team where your decisions carry real weight. Over the next few years, we plan to grow the engineering team, and we want this role to grow with it. Although not a must: If you are keen to grow into technical leadership we would love to enable this for you.
What you'll do
• Frontend: Evolve our Flutter app (iOS & Android) with a strong focus on accessibility and usability for people aged 50+
• Backend: Design and build our Node.js APIs and services for new feature-development
• Product: Work closely with medical and product colleagues – your voice matters in what we build and how
• Quality: Establish code review practices, testing strategy, and engineering standards that hold up in a regulated medical-software environment
• As an add-on: If you're interested in DevOps, you can help shape our cloud infrastructure, CI/CD pipelines, and deployment processes – but that’s not the core of the job
Requirements
What you bring
• 3-5+ years of professional software engineering experience, including relevant mobile and backend work
• Strong Flutter/Dart skills, or a proven ability to ramp up quickly (e.g. coming from React Native or native mobile development)
• You're comfortable working from underspecified problems. As a small company, we can't hand you full upfront designs and implementation plans – you'll need to ask the right questions, propose solutions, and make calls. In return, you have creative freedom
• A self-directed, structured way of working – you thrive in a small team with lots of ownership
• Dedication: we don't do inhumane startup hours, but when it matters – a release, a deadline, a critical fix – we count on you to go the extra mile
• Fluent English; German is a plus, but not required
Nice to have, not required
• Experience working in a startup or consultancy environment
• Interest or experience in software security – our product has passed an intense BSI security audit, and we intend to keep that bar high
• The ambition to grow into a leadership role as the team scales
• Experience with accessibility or building for older users
• DevOps experience (CI/CD, cloud infrastructure)
• Experience with DiGA, medical devices, or other regulated environments
You are probably not right if
• You need a large team around you. For now, it's you, a hands-on CTO, and a part-time engineer. Specialists to hand things off to will come later – you'll help hire them.
• You're looking for greenfield-only work. A big part of the job is improving an existing, live product with real users and real constraints
• You see your scope as highly specialized. Technical solutions are also needed for internal tooling here and there. If touching a HubSpot integration feels beneath you or out of scope, this isn't the right place.
• You consider yourself primarily an "AI orchestrator." We use AI tools too, but we're looking for someone who values learning, deep thinking, and actually understanding the systems they build.
Benefits
What we offer
• Purpose: Your code measurably helps people – clinically proven, prescribed by doctors
• Impact: As the next full-time engineer, you'll shape architecture, processes, and culture from the ground ups
• Stability with startup energy: 5+ years on the market, reimbursed by statutory health insurance
• Flexibility: Work from wherever you like in Germany. We can offer you our office in Potsdam or your home, it's simply up to you. Flexible working hours included.
• No office politics: A small, focused team where energy goes into the product, not into positioning
How to apply
Send us your CV – no cover letter needed. Instead, tell us in two or three sentences about a product or feature you've built that you're proud of.
